In a recent video shared by The Dodo, a female raccoon is caught peering out from a public trash bin, her eyes and paws visible as she claims her cozy spot. This particular bin has a lid, turning it into her little hideaway, and she fiercely defends it against anyone who gets too close, swiping at passersby in warning.
The footage is taken by a professional animal rehabilitator who knows the importance of keeping a safe distance. He cautions onlookers, saying, โDonโt go near there! Thereโs a raccoon inside!โ Despite his calm demeanor and careful approach, the raccoon remains agitated, wriggling and vocalizing her discontent. Eventually, she is coaxed out of her makeshift den.
To the surprise of many, soft chirps can be heard from within the bin. Nestled in the corner, hidden under a pile of red coffee cups, are six adorable raccoon kits, approximately 21 days old. Their tiny sounds are irresistibly cute, resembling something straight out of a cartoon.
While encountering a litter of raccoons in a trash can isnโt typical, it makes sense. The bin provides a warm, enclosed spaceโideal for a raccoon seeking shelter for her young. However, being in a public area meant this cozy setup wouldn’t last long.
Fortunately, Mama Raccoonโs distress was temporary. The entire family was safely relocated to a more suitable environment in the wild.
