We know our pets love us—unconditionally, enthusiastically, and eternally. But how do they know we love them back?
Since marriage counselor Gary Chapman, Ph.D., introduced the concept of the five love languages in 2007, people have used them to understand how they express and receive love—whether through physical touch, gifts, words of affirmation, quality time, or acts of service. Originally designed for romantic relationships, the idea has now expanded to cover singles, children, and, it seems, pets.
A recent survey of 2,000 dog and cat owners, conducted by Nulo pet food, sought to uncover which love language resonates most with our furry friends. And surprise, it’s not about giving gifts. Sorry, treat and toy lovers.
That said, our pets still enjoy some pampering. Over half of the pet owners surveyed (53%) said they’re committed to feeding their pets high-quality meals, with 47% focusing on health and nutrition, and 32% offering a variety in their pets' diets.
Quality time also ranked high, with 27% of owners prioritizing activities like letting their pets sleep in their bed or bringing them along on trips. (Though, we’re guessing dog owners are more likely to travel with their pets—cats would probably prefer to stay behind.)
But the clear favorite love language is physical touch. A massive 83% of pet owners believe that petting their pets is the best way to show love. Hugging (62%) and kissing (55%) were also highly ranked.
This makes sense, as animals naturally use tactile communication with each other—why wouldn’t they share that with us? And who hasn’t felt the love when their pet rubs against your leg or snuggles up beside you?
It’s also no surprise that 95% of the surveyed pet owners believe their pets know how much they’re loved because of how seriously they take showing affection. After all, who could resist cuddling that sweet puppy?
Interestingly, words of affirmation didn’t make the top of the list. We’ve all seen how a dog’s face lights up when they’re told they’re a good boy or girl, and cats seem to enjoy it too.
No matter the pet, it’s clear we all want to ensure our furry companions have the joy and affection they so generously give us.
