The Belgian Malinois is a remarkable breed, known for its intelligence, athleticism, and need for plenty of interaction. While these traits make them ideal for police and military work, they can also present challenges for typical pet owners. Erin Wilson, Eva’s owner, humorously described her dog as “a German shepherd on steroids.”
However, it was Eva’s natural instincts that ultimately saved Wilson’s life.
According to a release from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, Wilson was walking along a path with Eva ahead of her when a mountain lion suddenly appeared and attacked. Wilson screamed Eva’s name, prompting the dog to leap into action to defend her owner.
Unfortunately, the mountain lion quickly gained the upper hand, causing Wilson distress. She recounted to TODAY, “They fought for a couple of seconds, and then I heard her start crying. That’s when the cat latched onto her skull.”
In a desperate attempt to free Eva, Wilson threw rocks, attempted to choke the mountain lion, and even tried to gouge its eyes, but nothing worked. The situation turned when a passerby, Sharon Houston, stopped to help with a PVC pipe and pepper spray. Together, they managed to get the mountain lion to release its grip, though it had already dragged Eva along the path. She was rushed to the vet.
Eva was in critical condition, suffering from two skull fractures, a punctured sinus cavity, severe damage to her left eye, and experiencing seizures. To cover the hefty medical bills, Wilson set up a GoFundMe account, which quickly attracted an outpouring of support, raising over $30,000—far exceeding their needs.
Remarkably, Eva’s fighting spirit never wavered. Updates on her Instagram revealed her recovery journey, and soon she returned home to her sister Mishka, complete with new toys and even a celebratory milkshake. Wilson told The Sacramento Bee that Eva could expect more treats, including “stuffies” and steak dinners.
Though officially a Belgian Malinois, Eva embodies the true spirit of a hero. Her loyalty, bravery, and determination not only saved her owner but showcased the incredible bond between humans and dogs. Without a doubt, she is the goodest girl around.
