Introducing Pippa, the Therapy Dog Making a Difference at a Michigan High School

At Bay City Central High School in Michigan, the presence of Pippa, a four-year-old Golden Retriever, brings a burst of joy wherever she goes. Accompanied by Kati Loiselle, a social worker, Pippa interacts with students throughout the day. Whether they're excitedly greeting her or gently petting her, Pippa tailors her responses to the emotions of the students, offering exactly what they need at that moment.

More than just an adorable companion, Pippa is a certified therapy dog who plays a crucial role in creating a positive emotional environment within the school. She helps students and staff manage difficult moments, with Loiselle noting, “She actually does my job better than I do.”

For nearly three years, Loiselle has brought Pippa to work with her at Bay City Public Schools, after recognizing the significant impact therapy dogs can have on students. Pippa assists with various tasks, including behavioral interventions and teaching social skills.

Pippa's role goes beyond being an emotional regulator—she’s a genuine friend to the students. Loiselle recalls how Pippa has turned a student’s day around just by being present. “If they’re having a meltdown, they walk over and just say, ‘Pippa!’ And it completely changes their mood,” Loiselle shared.

The space where Loiselle and Pippa work is designed to be a refuge for students, featuring comfy couches, bean bags, and dog toys. This cozy environment, combined with Pippa’s innate soothing abilities, provides a safe place for students to relax or process their emotions.

In addition to emotional support, Pippa is also helping students develop life skills. Talking about Pippa or their own pets encourages students to practice conversational skills. Pippa’s ability to reflect students' emotions gives Loiselle the opportunity to teach them how to recognize and articulate their feelings.

Pippa’s influence extends to her ability to teach new tricks. Last year, Loiselle worked with students to help Pippa earn an American Kennel Club (AKC) certificate for novice tricks, further enhancing Pippa’s skill set. Students have taken on the responsibility of teaching Pippa new tricks, such as ringing a bell or weaving through legs, building their own confidence in the process.

Beyond her role at school, Pippa’s presence even brought joy to a Special Olympics pageant when a student requested to use Pippa as part of the event. While Pippa didn’t perform on stage, her involvement was a heartwarming experience for both the students and the school community.

Therapy dogs like Pippa are becoming increasingly vital in schools and institutions. Loiselle points out that universities are even offering certificates in animal-assisted therapy, recognizing the value therapy dogs bring to people in need.

Not only do students benefit from Pippa’s presence, but the school staff does as well. Loiselle shares that some staff members turn to Pippa when they’re having a tough day, finding comfort in her presence before heading back to work.

Pippa’s daily enthusiasm is infectious, and it’s clear that the students are just as eager to see her each day. With only one more year before Pippa “graduates” alongside the senior class, her legacy of joy and comfort at Bay City Central High School will continue to impact the school long after she leaves. Whether she’s helping students de-escalate a situation, teaching a new skill, or simply brightening someone’s day, Pippa demonstrates the profound bond between humans and animals.
