In a town in Massachusetts, residents got an unexpected visit from a cheeky grey seal who earned the nickname “Shoebert” after he was found lounging in Shoe Pond in Beverly. The mystery of how he ended up there remains unsolved, but the savvy seal managed to evade efforts to relocate him for several days.
Seals aren't typically found in freshwater, and the little guy had been out of the ocean long enough. But instead of staying put, Shoebert decided to make a bold move—he waddled his way to the Beverly Police Department. However, upon spotting the police, he quickly changed his mind and tried to make a quick escape, hopping away on his flippers.
The sight of Shoebert evading the officers was both amusing and unexpected. It almost seemed like he was running from the law—though it’s hard to imagine how they’d slap handcuffs on him! Fortunately, after calling in backup, the Beverly Police, Fire Department, Animal Control, NOAA, and the International Fund for Animal Welfare all worked together to safely relocate the cheeky seal.
