Pit Bull Saved From High-Kill Shelter Running Out of Time to Find a Forever Home

In December 2022, Mara, an American Pit Bull Terrier, was just hours away from being euthanized at a high-kill shelter in Georgia. The one-year-old dog had been waiting in the shelter for over a month without any interest from potential adopters until Braveheart Bulliez, a rescue group, stepped in to save her.

Pit Bulls like Mara are often misunderstood, but her rescuers saw past the stereotypes. “When we saw her photos, we knew we had to help,” said Krystle Carrara, founder of Braveheart Bulliez. “She had the most soulful, trusting eyes.”

However, Mara's journey was far from easy. After being rescued, Braveheart Bulliez secured a foster home for her and hired a trainer to provide in-home training. Unfortunately, within a few weeks, the foster home fell through, and two sponsors also backed out, leaving Mara with no place to go.

In January 2023, Braveheart Bulliez sent Mara to a well-respected boarding and training program. She excelled in her training, becoming a “phenomenal” leash walker and learning to remain calm around other dogs. Her progress amazed everyone, as she was smart and eager to learn.

Despite her progress, finding a foster or adoptive home for Mara proved to be difficult. Reaching out to rescues nationwide brought no results, and she spent another 10 months in boarding, which was hard on her both physically and mentally.

Finally, an almost-perfect foster for Mara emerged. A person who had expressed interest in fostering a special needs dog was found to be a great match for her. However, there was one catch—this foster family was planning to move overseas in six months, and would not be able to keep Mara long-term. Since January 2024, Mara has been in their care, but now, with the move approaching, she needs a forever home.

If Mara doesn't find a permanent home, she'll have to return to boarding, where she shut down after spending over a year. No one who knows her wants that for her.

“Mara is a beautiful girl, fully trained, and just needs to be in a home as the only dog,” her rescuers say. “She loves human attention, car rides, long walks, and pup cups. She's been failed by humans time and again, but we never gave up on her, and we’re determined to find her the perfect home.”
