When people take in rescue animals, they usually don’t expect much in return—just the satisfaction of giving an animal a second chance. Some rescues come with trauma, others need extra care, and some are simply too scared to get close. It’s always a bit of a mystery what kind of personality will emerge.
But for one Wisconsin family, their rescued donkey, Irvin, turned out to be a full-blown mischief maker—one who delights in high-speed chases at any given moment.
Irvin was in rough shape when he first arrived at Solstice Sanctuary. He was so weak he had to be carried out of the trailer. But you’d never guess that now. The once-timid donkey has transformed into a bundle of energy, constantly keeping his humans on their toes.
“Irvin is really obsessed with my husband, Bradley. It’s literally two kids playing,” Angela told The Dodo. “Irvin will chase him around the sanctuary. There’s so many times where I’ve been like, ‘Bradley, you can’t let him do that!’ And they’re doing it.”
To give Irvin a more productive outlet for his energy, Angela and Bradley got him a giant beach ball. Nearly as big as he is, the ball quickly became his new favorite thing to chase and kick around. But Irvin isn’t all about the chaos—he also loves snuggling with his humans and even sneaks into the house for treats when Bradley isn’t home.
