The American Rescue Dog Show Features a ‘Best Underbite’ Category and We’re Totally Smitten

While many are familiar with the prestigious Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, with its long history of celebrating purebred dogs, there's another competition that puts the spotlight on lovable mutts and rescue dogs: The American Rescue Dog Show.

Unlike its high-profile counterpart, the American Rescue Dog Show honors the everyday, adopted dog—those who might not have perfect coats or top-notch agility but are top-notch companions. Hosted by Joe Tessitore and Rob Riggle, the show embraces a campy, heartwarming atmosphere. With judges like Paula Abdul, Leslie Jordan, and Yvette Nicole Brown—each of whom has rescued dogs themselves—the event showcases the quirks and charm of rescue dogs.

The categories are refreshingly fun and inclusive, featuring titles like Best in Ears, Best in Snoring, Best in Wrinkles, and even Best in Underbite.

The show's creator, Michael Levitt, who has two rescue dogs of his own, Trooper and Nelson, wanted to make a bigger impact in helping dogs find homes. After taking a year off from producing to focus on dog rescue, Levitt turned that passion into the show, aiming to encourage people to adopt instead of buying from breeders. As he puts it, “As a rescuer, I’m saving one dog at a time, which is amazing, but as a producer, I knew I could do so much more to have an impact on a national level.”

And it’s not just about the fun and recognition—there’s also a charitable component. Dogs who win in any of the seven categories receive a $10,000 donation to their local animal welfare group, while the “Best in Rescue” dog gets an additional $100,000 to contribute to animal welfare causes.

Airing as perfect family-friendly entertainment, the American Rescue Dog Show also serves as a heartfelt reminder of the joy that comes with adopting a rescue dog. With so many furry friends waiting for loving homes, the show offers a chance to see just how amazing these dogs can be.
