Imagine browsing through secondhand treasures at your local thrift shop, only to discover an unexpected bonus—an extra cat included with your purchase. Montequlla, an orange tabby, somehow missed the memo about his family's move.
As his owners dropped off their furniture, including a large recliner, at the Denver Arc Thrift Store on New Year's Eve, they unknowingly left Montequlla hidden inside. It wasn’t long before the staff began to hear meowing coming from the chair.
The family had already left, but the store contacted Denver Animal Protection (DAP) to report the situation.
Jenna Humphreys, the DAP officer who responded, told the Denver Channel, “Sure enough, there’s a recliner out front, and there's a little orange tabby stuck inside. Very friendly, couldn’t get out. They said they had noticed the meowing shortly after somebody had dropped it off.”
Humphreys scanned Montequlla’s microchip and tried to contact his owners, but the microchip had not been updated, so she couldn’t reach them right away.
This serves as a reminder to all pet owners to keep their pet’s microchip information up-to-date.
Meanwhile, Montequlla's family was back home, desperately searching for their missing cat. Once they realized he might have been accidentally stowed away inside the chair, they immediately contacted the thrift store.
Cats often hide during stressful situations like moving, seeking refuge from the chaos. With some reassurance, you can help your anxious kitty adjust to changes.
As a side note, recliners can pose serious risks to cats, so always check under or inside furniture to avoid any accidents.
Thankfully, Montequlla was unharmed and safely returned to his owners, who were “relieved” to be reunited with their adventurous feline, as noted by Humphreys.
