Community Rallies to Raise $37,000 for Lonely Child Seeking Friendship

One of the most delightful aspects of childhood is spending time with friends. However, friendships are more than just fun; they give kids a sense of belonging, boost their self-esteem, and help them develop essential social skills.

Unfortunately, it’s heartbreaking when children are excluded and bullied by their peers.

In Amarillo, Texas, a young boy named Shayden was so eager to make friends that he went door to door looking for kids his age. He knocked on Brennan and Angel Ray’s door, and the doorbell camera captured their interaction.

Shayden asked Brennan through the doorbell camera if he knew any kids around 11 or 12 because he needed some friends. Brennan had to inform Shayden that they had no kids his age and suggested he try another house on the block. Shayden then confessed, “Well, um, they’re not my friends anymore because they’re bullies to me.”

Upon learning that the Ray family only had a 2-year-old daughter, Shayden remarked, “They’re just like the cutest things I have ever known.”

Watching Shayden go door-to-door searching for friends was a formidable sight for many.

TikTok user Krive’s girlfriend commented, “He’s like my younger brother. I hope he finds true friends and stops being bullied. No one should be bullied.” Another user, Shayne Moss, said, “This breaks my heart. I was bullied all through school and was miserable. I hope life gets better for him.”

The video went viral, with over 67 million views. The Rays started a GoFundMe campaign to help Shayden and his family, aiming to buy him a gaming system, school clothes, and amusement park tickets. They wrote, “100% of donations will go directly to Shayden and his family. We hope to raise enough for a family trip and continue showing kindness while raising awareness for bullying and suicide prevention!”

The Ray family later visited Shayden’s family and shared a follow-up video showing them exploring Shayden’s rock collection and watching his favorite funny videos online. “We finally got to meet Shayden! He had the same joyful energy in person as on the doorbell camera,” they shared on TikTok.

While it’s sad that Shayden had to go to such lengths to find a friend, it’s heartwarming to see how the community responded, bringing joy to Shayden and his family. Despite his current challenges in making friends, the overwhelming support he has received should reassure him that he is loved and that many wonderful people are eager to meet him.

Cops Called to Quinceañera End Up Joining the Celebration Instead

Birthday parties are generally fun events, but they can sometimes get loud or upset neighbors who must be added to the guest list. This happened during a quinceañera in Greensboro, prompting someone to call the police with a noise complaint. However, instead of breaking up the celebration, the responding officers joined the festivities.

For those unfamiliar, a quinceañera is a significant celebration in Latino cultures, marking a girl’s 15th birthday and her transition from girlhood to womanhood. These events are typically elaborate, featuring elegant gowns, a beautiful venue, and plenty of delicious food and lively music. The joyful atmosphere can sometimes be loud enough to attract attention from the neighborhood. When officers arrived to check on the noise, they were warmly invited to join the party, an offer they couldn’t resist.

The Greensboro Police Department later shared on Facebook that the three officers had a great time at the party. They enjoyed a meal and handed out stickers to guests. They even posed for a photo with the birthday girl. What could have been a tense situation turned into a heartwarming community moment.

The Facebook post received numerous positive comments. Joyce Marie wrote, “Thank you, officers Matthews, King, and Johnson! This is a wonderful way to build community, and the family, especially the young girl, will never forget it.”

Kelly Jo Netter added, “Now that’s community policing! These officers turned this into a positive experience for everyone involved. Thank you!”

Another commenter, Becca La Fea, said, “This is an extraordinary event in our culture. They were probably super honored to have you guys there. You all are great!!!”

Although a few people mentioned that the noise might have been an issue, most comments were overwhelmingly positive. Many wished the birthday girl a happy day and appreciated seeing the officers engaging positively with the community. Building relationships with residents can significantly impact fostering trust and understanding between law enforcement and the communities they serve.

The officers had no intention of dampening the young girl’s special day. While the noise complaint was left unresolved, the family had a memorable and uplifting experience. Hopefully, the neighbors understood the importance of the celebration to the girl and her family.

The Greensboro Police Department also wished the teen a happy birthday in their post, and we echo that sentiment. Everyone involved had a fantastic time.

Young Aspirant: 8-Year-Old Goes Job Hunting for an Xbox

According to WCNC, an 8-year-old boy named Nash Johnson from Lexington, Kentucky, wanted to buy an Xbox, but his weekly allowance of $5 wasn’t sufficient. With the Xbox priced at around $300, Nash realized it would take him five years to save enough money.

Determined to accelerate his savings, Nash decided to look for a job. He noticed a “help wanted” sign outside Drake’s restaurant near his grandmother’s house and applied online for a dishwasher position. Nash confidently told WCNC, “I’m very good at washing dishes.”

However, Kentucky’s labor laws require workers to be at least 16 years old. Despite this, Nash’s application caught the attention of the restaurant’s management, who were curious about the young applicant.

Mark Thornburg, Drake’s chief operating officer, explained to Good Morning America that the kitchen manager initially thought Nash had mistakenly left out a digit on his age. When she called Nash’s grandmother’s house, Nash answered and revealed his true age of 8.

Nash’s mother, Belinda Johnson, found her son’s job application amusing but was not surprised. She praised Nash’s fearless attitude and determination, saying, “That kid is not afraid to fail. He’s a go-getter.”

In the Johnson household, financial literacy is a priority. Belinda uses three jars to teach Nash about spending, saving, and giving. After reviewing his jars, Nash decided he needed to increase his savings and thought that getting a job would help. “He’s like, ‘I can get me more money if I get me a job,’” Belinda explained.

Although Nash was not hired, Drake’s management invited him to a new hire orientation to give him a glimpse of what working at the restaurant would be like. At the orientation, Nash received an official Drake’s employee shirt, which thrilled him.

Thornburg noted, “I tell a lot of people he would have been just as happy with his uniform shirt because his eyes got about as big as a softball. He was so excited.” Nash also learned how to operate the dishwasher, preparing him for future employment.

The highlight of Nash’s orientation was receiving a new Xbox from Thornburg as a reward for his impressive work ethic. Thornburg said the gift “changed the little guy’s life for sure” and praised Nash as “the youngest applicant” he had ever encountered.

This story highlights the importance of working hard to achieve one’s goals. It commends Belinda for teaching financial responsibility and Drake for recognizing and encouraging Nash’s dedication.

89-Year-Old Pizza Delivery Man Receives Over $12,000 in Tips from Generous Customers

Kindness from strangers is always uplifting, but when many individuals come together to support one person in need, it creates a powerful and heartwarming display of humanity.

This was the case for 89-year-old pizza delivery driver Derlin Newey, who touched the hearts of the Valdez family during a pizza delivery. Newey’s friendly nature and impressive work ethic unexpectedly led him to become a TikTok sensation and prompted a wave of generous donations from strangers eager to ease his burdens.

The story began when Carlos Valdez posted a video of Newey’s delivery, captured by the family’s Nest doorbell camera, on TikTok. In the video, Newey cheerfully greets the family and engages in conversation.

Valdez was struck by Newey’s dedication and posted, “What is this guy doing delivering pizzas? True hustler.” Curious, Valdez decided to learn more.

Upon discovering that Newey worked multiple weekly shifts for Papa John’s, Valdez and his family decided to show their appreciation. They created a Venmo account for their TikTok followers, encouraging small donations—ranging from $0.25 to $1.00—to gather a tip for Newey.

In just one week, they amassed an impressive $12,069 for Newey, who was unaware of the effort. After arranging more deliveries to gather more information, the Valdez family visited Newey’s home with a giant novelty check.

Newey’s reaction was profoundly touching:

They also presented him with the cash in an envelope.

Overwhelmed, Newey said, “How do I ever say thank you? I don’t know what to say.”

Newey, who lives alone and works about 30 hours a week delivering pizzas to supplement his Social Security income, was profoundly moved by the support.

Valdez expressed his satisfaction to KSL, saying, “This worked out perfectly. He needed this. I’m happy we could help. We should all treat others with the same kindness and respect he shows. He won our hearts.”

Valdez also shared a thank-you video with his 60,000 TikTok followers, expressing gratitude for the community’s support. He noted that, despite global challenges, the outpouring of kindness was heartening. Valdez mentioned that he would keep the Venmo account open for further donations, ensuring all contributions go directly to Newey.

Kudos to the Valdez family for their generosity and for bringing attention to the wonderful Derlin Newey. Your actions are a powerful reminder of the goodness people can achieve together.

Kind-Hearted 8-Year-Old Raises $100,000 to Support Waffle House Server

Everyone has a favorite restaurant, and frequent visits often lead to recognizing familiar faces among the servers and sometimes even forming friendships.

This was the case for 8-year-old Kayzen Hunter, who began visiting a Waffle House in Arkansas with his parents and occasionally his grandpa. He quickly bonded with Devonte Gardner, his favorite server, who always greeted him with high fives and enjoyed Kayzen’s jokes.

As their friendship developed, Kayzen noticed that Gardner often arrived at work by being dropped off, as he didn’t own a car. The Hunter family soon learned that Gardner, his wife, and two young daughters were living in a hotel due to problems with their previous home.

“We wanted something affordable, so we moved to a low-income area,” Gardner shared with Today.com. “We are tired of dealing with rats, roaches, and black mold. My daughters were getting sick. Without heating, we had to use multiple blankets to stay warm during the cold.”

Gardner, his wife, and their daughters, aged 2 and 3, lived in a cramped hotel room for eight months. While hotels can be suitable for short stays, long-term living in such a confined space can be mentally and financially challenging. However, with limited options, it was their best choice.

Moved by Gardner’s situation, Kayzen wanted to help. He came up with the idea to start a GoFundMe campaign to buy Gardner a car for commuting. Kayzen’s mom was initially hesitant, but since children cannot open GoFundMe accounts, she eventually agreed and helped set it up.

The original fundraising goal was $500 to assist Gardner with transportation. However, as word spread, donations quickly surpassed this target. People were deeply touched by the campaign that Kayzen and his mom had created.

“Devonte is one of the most joyful and positive people you’ve ever met! He always greets us with a big smile,” Kayzen wrote on the GoFundMe page.”I hope you’ll join me in spreading kindness. Every contribution makes a difference!”.

Gardner has significant plans for the funds raised by Kayzen. His first step is to move into a new apartment, having recently signed a lease for a two-bedroom unit. With the donations totaling $108,000 and growing, Gardner plans to save the rest for his daughters’ future.

“I’m going to save the rest because I want to put my daughters in a good school and ensure they have a great environment,” Gardner told Today.com. “Most of the money is for my daughters to ensure they have a great life and we no longer have to struggle.”

Gardner continues to work at Waffle House, greeting Kayzen and his family with the same enthusiasm and high fives as always.

At 92, His Knit Hats Are Keeping the Homeless Warm—And His Story Will Melt Your Heart

At 92 years old, Morrie Boogaart faces a terminal illness and is confined to his bed, but his determination to help others remains unwavering. Despite battling skin cancer, Boogaart dedicates his time knitting warm, cozy hats for needy people. His small acts of kindness create a significant impact.

Known as “The Hat Man,” Boogaart began his knitting journey in 2001, inspired by his daughter, Karen Lauters. The hobby quickly became a passion, allowing him to spread joy through his knitted creations.

Boogaart told Health Beat, “I knit all day and night, making hats in various colors. I often wake up at night to continue knitting. It brings me great satisfaction.”

To date, Boogaart has crafted and donated over 8,000 hats. His routine involves knitting approximately one hat using a particular hoop every two days. His hat is complete after several hours of work and a few breaks for coffee and rest.

Boogaart’s daughter, Karen, then organizes and delivers the hats to charities like the Salvation Army and Mel Trotter Ministries, distributed to people without homes.

Abbey Sladick, director of communications at Mel Trotter, shared with WZZM13, “A winter hat holds great significance for those we help. Knowing it was made with care adds an extra layer of warmth.”

Boogaart’s story has gained widespread attention, leading to a flood of gifts from around the globe, including heartfelt letters, flowers, and cookies. Yet, Boogaart’s favorite gift is yarn—enabling him to continue his mission. A generous donation from Red Heart, a yarn company in Georgia, recently bolstered his supplies.

As of 2014, Michigan had approximately 97,642 homeless individuals. While Boogaart’s efforts alone won’t solve the issue, they highlight the power of compassion and the positive impact individuals can make. In Detroit, some businesses use arts and crafts to aid people experiencing homelessness through training programs that lead to employment. Additionally, Michigan’s Campaign to End Homelessness is making strides in addressing this critical issue.

The count of chronically homeless individuals in Michigan fell from 10,330 in 2014 to 6,675 in 2015. While considerable work remains, the combined efforts of individual contributions and supportive policies and programs are essential in advancing progress.

Morrie Boogaart exemplifies how finding a purpose and giving back can create meaningful change. He believes learning to knit was one of the best experiences of his life, and his contributions demonstrate the profound impact one person can have.

Boogaart’s story reminds us that it’s never too late to acquire new skills and make a difference in the lives of others.
