Man Forms Friendship with Hummingbird Named Hector, Spreading Joy to Millions

Hummingbirds captivate many with their tiny size and unique flying abilities, so it’s no surprise that people often set up feeders to attract them. But one special hummingbird, Hector, and his human friend have taken the fascination to a whole new level of heartwarming.

Julian, known online as @birdperson666, has amassed over 2 million followers on TikTok and Instagram by sharing videos of his interactions with Hector. The neighborhood hummingbird, dubbed “Hector the Nectar Collector,” has been visiting Julian regularly, and it only took about five days for Hector to start eating from his hand. Sometimes, Hector pops by multiple times a day.

Hummingbirds are amazing creatures. They beat their wings about 70 times per second, can fly forward, backward, and even hover, and have an extremely high metabolism. Hector’s regular visits make sense—he needs to consume twice his body weight in food daily. And it’s no wonder he’s chosen Julian’s home as a favorite stop for snacks over the past couple of years.

Julian’s TikTok and Instagram videos of Hector quickly went viral during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic. The pattern in the videos is simple but sweet: Julian calls out, “Yo, Hectorrrrr,” while offering sugar water, and Hector flies over to greet him. Occasionally, Hector even lands on Julian's finger as he eats. Hummingbirds are known for their sharp memory, so Hector clearly recognizes Julian’s voice and presence.

Though Hector sometimes disappears for weeks or even months, as he is non-migratory, he always returns. Julian uses the Audubon Society’s recommended recipe for hummingbird nectar—four parts water to one part white granulated sugar—ensuring it closely mimics the nectar found in flowers.

In early 2023, Julian moved to a new apartment and had to say goodbye to Hector. However, he soon had a new visitor: a female hummingbird who has picked up where Hector left off, bringing continued joy to Julian and his followers.

Thanks to Julian, Hector, and the new little visitor, the love for hummingbirds and the wonder they bring continues to grow.
