This Creepy Parasite Manipulates Insects Into Drowning Themselves

Here’s a rather unsettling video of a parasite emerging from a praying mantis. It may not be as heartwarming as a beaver making a dam from household objects, but it certainly captivates in its own eerie, twisted way.

The video, shared by @WowTerrifying on Twitter and originally credited to “Insect World,” shows a mantis with its rear end submerged in water. Moments later, long, dark, spindly lines begin crawling out of its body, writhing and moving as though they have a mind of their own. It’s disturbing, to say the least. However, it’s worth noting that the person handling the mantis seems to be trying to assist the creature.

This bizarre sight involves a parasite called a horsehair worm. Known for its resemblance to the symbiote in “Spider-Man,” this worm takes control of an insect’s nervous system. It manipulates its host, often leading insects like mantises or crickets to drown themselves in water, where the worm can then lay its eggs, continuing a rather morbid cycle of nature.

If you’re feeling disturbed, you’re not alone. Many viewers have expressed their regret after watching the video.

“That’s enough scrolling for me,” one person commented.
“This will haunt me,” another said.

While nature offers both beautiful and terrifying wonders, it always provides something endlessly fascinating to witness.
