Can those who have faced hardship understand the importance of helping others? Chuck could have felt compelled to give back after years of struggling. Or maybe it’s the notion that when someone experiences kindness, they are driven to share it with others.
Whatever the reason, Charles “Chuck” Logan, 56, receives recognition on social media for his kindness towards a single mother with a flat tire when no one else offered assistance.
On September 23, Shuree Michelle encountered a flat tire on a street in Ogden, Utah. As she waited by the roadside, numerous cars passed without stopping to help.
Logan, currently homeless, noticed Michelle’s predicament and approached her. “This man came over and asked if I had a spare tire and a jack,” Michelle told Yahoo Lifestyle. “He immediately offered help—it was such a sweet gesture.”
Michelle gave Logan $10 for his assistance.
Anna Davidson, owner of Jessie Jean's Historic 25th Café, located across the street from where Michelle’s tire blew out, captured the moment. Davidson shared the photo on Facebook, which garnered over 3,000 reactions.
Davidson wrote, “I saw Chuck, a homeless man who works tirelessly at the café, helping this young lady. He’s one of those people who often gets overlooked. No one else stopped to assist, just Chuck…the homeless guy. Thank you, Chuck.” She included the hashtags #findthekind and #kindnessmatters.
Logan helps out around the café by sweeping, sanitizing, and doing dishes in exchange for meals. “He’s a valuable support here,” Davidson noted.
Davidson and Logan met during the government shutdown last December when the café offered $2 coffee and beignets to support affected workers.
“We have about 5,000 government employees in Ogden, and their inability to work was a significant issue,” Davidson said. “We decided to help as much as possible before losing our business.”
Davidson’s husband and co-owner, Ron, had experienced homelessness for two years, giving him insight into the struggles faced by the economically disadvantaged. This personal experience motivates their community support.
Ron shared, “I understand what it’s like to be cold, hungry, and without a place to go.”
Thanks to community donations, the café’s support program continued, leading to their connection with Logan.
This story exemplifies how acts of kindness can create a chain reaction. The Davidsons’ generosity towards Logan inspired him to help Michelle, and who knows how this kindness might continue to spread.
