Love stories often take unexpected turns, and for one couple, their journey was paused for more than 40 years. Jeanne Gustavson and Steve Watts first crossed paths in 1972 at the German club of Loyola University, where sparks flew almost instantly. Their romance could have blossomed, but unfortunately, it was abruptly cut short when Gustavson ended the relationship.
Gustavson shared with CBS News that her mother's strong disapproval of their interracial relationship played a significant role in her decision to break things off. Despite their deep connection, the pressure from her family led to their separation. Over time, both Gustavson and Watts went on to marry and later divorce other people, but the memory of their young love lingered.
After four decades and all life's changes, they would have moved on completely. But true love has a way of enduring, and in 2021, Gustavson decided to search for Watts—and she found him.
Watts, however, had faced some serious challenges, including two strokes that left him confined to bed. Yet, their rekindled love and determination to be together proved stronger than any obstacle. Gustavson arranged for Watts to move from the nursing home to her home in Portland, Oregon, where she took on the role of caregiver.
Although their lives have changed, the couple is finally getting their happy ending. Surrounded by loved ones, they recently tied the knot, and now they can spend the rest of their lives making up for lost time.
