For those unfamiliar with moose trivia, the process of shedding antlers typically takes time. This annual event occurs after mating season, with moose generally losing one antler at a time.
It’s extremely uncommon for a bull moose to shed both antlers simultaneously—and even more unusual for someone to capture that moment on film.
That’s why shed hunter (yes, it’s a real term) and outdoor enthusiast Derek Burgoyne describes his footage of this phenomenon as a “one-in-a-million” moment.
According to The Guardian, Burgoyne was piloting his drone over a secluded area of forest in Canada when he spotted three moose in a clearing. He followed one of the bulls, which started the characteristic wobble that indicates its antlers are about to fall off.
Burgoyne instinctively kept the camera rolling, unaware that he was about to capture something extraordinary.
It’s tough to decide what’s more enjoyable to watch—the incredibly rare natural occurrence or Burgoyne’s genuine enthusiasm for his hobby.
“I was shaking a bit. It was definitely an adrenaline rush,” he told CBC News, noting that he has found hundreds of shed antlers throughout his life.
Antler hunting has surged in popularity and profitability in recent years, but Burgoyne emphasizes that his motivation comes from a love of the outdoors, not financial gain.
“I love being in the woods. It’s great exercise, and tracking moose in the winter while searching for their sheds in the spring is a thrill. Every find feels just as special as the first. It never gets old,” he shared with The Guardian.
Thanks, Derek Burgoyne, for following your passion! Because of you, we can all experience this once-in-a-lifetime moment. Here’s to celebrating good moose news!
