Five farmers unite to rescue the ‘world’s loneliest sheep’ after two years of isolation

Sheep are known for their toughness and adaptability. They can thrive in harsh environments, from the driest deserts to snowy mountain ranges. However, as social animals, they can't endure isolation for long. This was the case for Fiona, a sheep who spent over two years stranded alone at the bottom of a cliff in Scotland.

Once called the “loneliest sheep in Britain” and later in the world, Fiona became a local sensation after being spotted by a kayaker in 2021. Two years later, she was found in good health but with overgrown fleece in need of a proper shearing.

The exact circumstances that led Fiona to become stranded are unclear, but rescuing her presented a significant challenge. Despite a petition with over 50,000 signatures, the Scottish SPCA deemed the rescue difficult due to the rugged terrain and the potential stress it could cause Fiona.

That's when five farmers, including sheep farmer and BBC presenter Cammy Wilson and YouTube star Graeme Parker, stepped in to help. Using ropes and patience, they managed to locate Fiona in a cave, slightly overweight from her solitude, and successfully brought her up the cliff to safety.

The dramatic rescue, captured with stunning drone footage, was followed by Fiona's transfer to Dalscone Farm Fun, where she found her forever home with new owner Ben Best. While some animal rights activists expressed concerns about the setting, likening it to a “petting zoo,” Best assured them that the farm operates more like a sanctuary. Fiona will remain out of the public eye for several months to ensure she’s settled before making any appearances.

From the world's loneliest sheep to a star of her own story, Fiona is finally enjoying a life surrounded by care and attention.
