Meals on Wheels Launches Initiative to Keep Seniors and Pets Together

Pets provide companionship and emotional support, making a significant difference in the lives of many seniors, especially those living alone or caring for a sick partner. However, the financial burden of pet ownership can be challenging for elderly individuals on a fixed income. Some may even sacrifice their own meals or medications to ensure their pets are fed.

Meals on Wheels, a national program dedicated to reducing senior hunger and isolation, has long provided free, hot meals to elderly individuals. Recently, the Berkshire County branch in Massachusetts introduced a new initiative to assist pet-owning seniors. In collaboration with Berkshire Humane Society and Berkshire Family & Individual Resources (BFAIR), the organization now includes monthly pet food deliveries for program participants who may struggle to access or afford pet supplies.

Kayla Brown-Wood, Community Services Director for Elder Services, highlighted the importance of the initiative, stating, “Most people would feed their pets before feeding themselves. This program helps prevent that from happening.” By delivering pet food directly to seniors' homes, the partnership ensures that elderly pet owners don’t have to choose between their own well-being and their pet’s needs.

On a national level, Meals on Wheels has also joined forces with PetSmart Charities to help seniors keep their beloved pets at home. This collaboration has already benefited more than 25,000 seniors, offering not just food assistance but also grooming and veterinary services. According to research conducted with PetSmart Charities, 97% of seniors receiving pet support through Meals on Wheels say the program has allowed them to keep their pets.

By addressing both human and pet needs, Meals on Wheels is strengthening the bond between seniors and their animal companions, ensuring they can stay together without added financial stress.
