Ryan Martin, a seasoned mud ball player, reflects on nearly two decades of muddy joy. For him, this event is a perfect opportunity to reconnect with childhood friends. “You hit a point where you realize that you might not be going pro,” he says, “so why not keep the competitive spirit alive?”
While the fun in the mud is palpable, there are some not-so-glamorous aftermaths. Martin chuckles about the lingering effects, sharing some of the downsides of muddy playtime. “You’ll be cleaning out your ears for a long while,” he says, recalling persistent bits of dirt that seem to hang around well after the mud has dried.
Mahala Smith also finds joy in the Mud Bowl. A football enthusiast since first grade, she joined a tackle football team for women and later embraced the muddy experience. “It’s like a little mini vacation,” she says, highlighting the friendly atmosphere and social gatherings at local hotels and campsites. In her eyes, the event creates lasting connections among athletes.
Though the games are lighthearted, competition is no joke. The two-hand touch football can get a bit chippy, but players always maintain a sense of fun after the final whistle blows. Many participants are standout high school athletes or college players looking to relive the glory days. Over the years, retired professionals have also taken to the muddy field, adding to the event’s rich history.
The theme for this year’s Mud Bowl celebration was “50 Years, The Best of Five Decades.” Throughout its history, the tournament has garnered significant community support, raising over $1 million for charity. It’s a testament to the spirit of giving as players enjoy their muddy escapades while contributing to a good cause.
