Did you know that chickens can purr? Well, not all of them, but Grits, the adorable silkie chicken, is giving cats a run for their money when it comes to the cutest “purring” sounds! When most people think of chickens, they usually picture them as a source of food, eggs, or just running around aimlessly in a backyard. But some chickens, like Grits, are beloved pets with personalities all their own.
While many chickens are kept for practical purposes like egg production, others are simply here to provide companionship and entertainment. And yes, chickens can even wear clothes if their owners decide they want to dress them up!
Jen Hamilton, a nurse, has a silkie chicken named Grits who loves nothing more than a warm bath followed by being swaddled like a baby. Recently, Jen shared a video on social media showing Grits after her bath, demonstrating how much the silkie enjoys being wrapped up and comforted as she dries off.
“I had to give Grits a bath, but did you know she loves being swaddled?” Hamilton explains in the video. “Chickens actually purr when they're happy. Watch this.”
As Hamilton attempts to swaddle Grits, there's a minor mishap—Grits face plants with a tiny “thud” as Hamilton wraps the towel around her. But no worries! Hamilton, being a nurse, quickly sat Grits back up and finished swaddling her without any harm done. The little tumble and Grits' endearing “purr” had viewers laughing and falling in love with the chicken's happy sounds.
One person commented, “I LOST IT WHEN SHE FELL & the ‘Whoops' was so calm and collected,” with laughing emojis. Another wrote, “I will never not laugh hysterically at the thud ‘whoops…sorry.'” A third added, “She sounds like a printer from the '80s when she purrs, and I love it.”
