Coming out as LGBTQ can be an incredibly challenging experience, often fraught with fear of rejection. This concern can amplify the emotional stakes, especially when it involves close family members. The last thing many want is to let down those they cherish, particularly when that disappointment relates to their true identity.
It's understandable that some individuals choose to keep their identities private for a time. However, there are occasions when others inadvertently disclose this information before one is ready. This was the case for a woman known as Jenna Tea on social media. Jenna, a trans woman, had not yet shared her identity with her 89-year-old grandmother. When a family member revealed her trans identity, Jenna decided it was time to have an open conversation with her grandmother.
What followed was a deeply moving exchange that has left many viewers in tears online.
Fortunately, Jenna had the foresight to record this heartfelt moment for posterity. In an interview with Upworthy, she explained, “Someone in my family told her that I was trans, and this conversation was the first time we discussed it. She was saying such kind things, and I wanted to remember this moment forever. I took my phone out and started recording; she has macular degeneration, so she couldn't see that I was recording, which made the moment even more authentic and wholesome.”
The audio plays in the background of the video Jenna shared on her social media, accompanied by childhood photos and videos, including those of her in drag before her transition. Jenna's grandmother can be heard offering profound support, saying, “You have to do what makes you happy. It's something we have to adjust to, and sometimes it's hard for other people, but they’re not living your life; you are. It’s kind of their problem to readjust, so the best thing is to put it out there and deal with it as it comes.”
Jenna shared with Upworthy that her grandmother has always been welcoming and accepting. “She has always embraced me and those around her. I’m a drag queen, and performing drag helped me discover my trans identity. She has attended several of my shows and loves them, so I knew she wouldn't react negatively. However, I was astonished by how accepting she truly was. Among my family, she has taken it the best, which amazes me. I feel incredibly fortunate to have such supportive family, and the world is lucky to have her.”
Compiling the video was an emotional journey for Jenna, who noted in her caption that she cried throughout the process—an experience that resonated with many strangers online.
“I AM IN TEARS THIS MORNING SEEING THIS — THIS IS SO LOVELY,” one user commented.
“I made it to 9 am before I got emotional over someone on the internet,” another shared.
“This made me sob. I have a five-year-old who faces internal struggles I recognized in myself at a young age. I love them so much. Some days they ask if we can pretend they’re a girl, and we do! I just want to play with them and love them forever. I'm so happy you experienced this love; everyone deserves it. You made my day; thank you,” a mother expressed.
The outpouring of support in the comments adds another touching layer to Jenna's story. Grandparents can seem like a magical presence in childhood, and witnessing their love and acceptance as one grows into their identity is truly invaluable.
